In a dynamic work environment, every day is an opportunity to learn something new and grow both personally and professionally. As educators, we aim to immerse our students in these environments so that they can develop the competencies and skills needed for the job market. In this project, Professor Gabriela Monforte proposed an Escape Room tasked with simulating a typical workday in a bank, where various operations are carried out by interacting with clients and making decisions based on statistical analysis.
Overview
The innovation consisted of an immersive resource using gamification designed to recreate a typical day at Banco Creciendo Juntos to assess and provide feedback on the development of descriptive statistics competencies. As students navigate through the game, they engage in a variety of operations and activities, interacting with clients and making decisions based on statistics.
“We needed a real-world environment to assess competencies for the statistical thinking training unit, and with the help of a virtual training partner, students would have the opportunity to make decisions and more effectively assess the development of their competencies.”
Development
Professor Monforte and her team successfully developed this project by motivating students to analyze a database with which the resource was designed. The first thing they did was to explain the mission they had to solve and then they formulated several activities in which they would use descriptive statistics as a tool. Upon completing the activities, the resource provided them with a detailed feedback report and the level of competencies achieved. The project was implemented in 251 students across the Monterrey, Tampico, Chiapas, Hidalgo, and Puebla campuses.
“We had the need to develop an immersive resource, and the support provided by Novus helped us achieve this goal.”
Impact measurement and results
To determine the impact generated by Banco Creciendo Juntos on the students, Professor Monforte and her team decided to have an experimental group and a control group. When measuring the students' motivation, they found that, when using the immersive resource, students showed more motivation in their learning.
“The simulator inspires us as students to have a real work experience and to develop ourselves in a scenario that we might actually work in the future.”
Furthermore, the satisfaction generated in students by this resource was incredible; it managed to demonstrate a significant positive impact on learning. Professor Monforte considers that "Banco Creciendo Juntos" is not only a tool that helps with students' learning and motivation, but it also allows the teacher to have an ally in assessing the development of competencies.
“It was incredible to see how some students, upon finishing the experience, would come and ask if they could play again.”
Recommendations for other innovators
Professor Gaby encourages her fellow teachers to dare to participate in Novus, considering that taking the risk to innovate will help teachers improve their own learning and that of their students. With the support provided by the entire Novus team, the implementation of your project will go well.
"The reality is that having an innovative or disruptive idea is wonderful, but it's even more wonderful when you see it become a reality; the excitement that this generates is incredible."
The innovation of Banco Creciendo Juntos, created by Professor Gaby, has proven to be very valuable for the Business School, and it has been incorporated as the final exam for the Statistical Thinking Training Unit in Monterrey, Monterrey Campus, and Saltillo. We are delighted to see how these experiments begin with an idea and transform into a full-fledged educational innovation aimed at improving the education of our students.
